You’ll want to begin your journey at the Visitor’s Center. Over time, erosion caused the basalt dikes to wear away faster than the surrounding granite, creating a deep valley where the gorge is located today. As they cooled, the granite broke, and small dikes of basalt rock were forced upwards along the length of the fractures. But don’t worry no dinosaurs are included in your visit! At that time, the granite walls of the gorge were buried in molten rock. The Flume Gorge was formed over 200 million years ago during the Jurassic Period. However, I’m not athletic in the slightest and found it very easy. The path does include uphill walking and lots of stairs. The entire loop is about two miles and takes about 90 minutes. Furthermore, from the boardwalk, you’ll be able to closely examine the beautiful flowers, ferns and mosses that grow in the Flume Gorge. Along the way, you’ll see waterfalls, glacial pools, a historic covered bridge, incredible mountain views, glacial boulders, and moss-covered granite walls rising up to 90 feet tall!
